Paragraph summary of what was covered in class

Welcome to the clawhammer banjo! In class we talked about basics such as how to hold the banjo, how to tune the banjo, and the parts of the banjo. We focused on right hand technique and learned the 3 components that make up the basic clawhammer motion, or the “boom-chikka”. Those components were the strike with the index finger, the brush, and the pluck with the thumb.

Assignment for next week

Practice along with the recording provided. Get a strap for your banjo.

How to Practice this at home

Once you’ve tuned your banjo to a tuner or tuner app, and you are seated with good posture, play along with the recordings in order. Watch your right hand while you do this, and make sure your thumb is landing on the thumb string at the correct moment.
