The Music Business Explained: Strategies For Musicians

from 40.00

The focus of this pair of classes is to provide an insightful overview of how the music industry works, with a special emphasis on the people who would constitute an artist's team (i.e. those requiring to have a relationship with the artist and need regular communication). You won't learn "Get Success Quick!" strategies, nor will you gain the legal insight to assume the role of Junior Lawyer Person; there are many (un)worthy books and seminars promising just that, and they're easy to find. Rather, these classes provide an overall sense of the dynamics and psychology that exists between various professionals who work within music. Each class date, we will focus on a specific career within management, marketing and promotions, allowing each session to be audited and understood on their own, although we will draw connections between the roles. The first class offers a description of a particular job, while the second posits that job from a point of view most useful for musicians who want to know what goes on at record labels, distributors, publicity and management companies, and radio promotion agencies. The goals are (Class One) to provide you with a broad understanding of that job's specific responsibilities and focus, and (Class Two) to allow you to enter into the business end of a musical career with a sense of how all the cogs work.

Ben Goldberg runs the Brooklyn label Ba Da Bing Records, known for being confusing to spell. He has managed, publicized and radio promoted artists and releases, having worked with groups such as Neutral Milk Hotel, Interpol, The Breeders and Arcade Fire, and at the labels Matador, Merge and Atlantic. This is his first time appearing in a Broadway musical and wants to thank everyone who helped get him here, especially Shoeless Joe!
