Paragraph summary of what was covered in class

Here’s what we covered in week 1!

  • Brief intro of class and goals.

  • First song

  • Song form is A B A B A

  • Our song is in C Major. Except for our D7 chord, all of the chords we’ve seen so far in this song are “DIATONIC” to the key of C major

C maj chord: I chord

D min chord: ii chord

F maj: IV chord

G and G7 chord: V chord and V7 chord respectively

Am chord: vi chord

E7 chord* (Non-diatonic): This is our V/V chord (Ask me before or after class if you’re wondering what the heck this means!)

SH-BOOM | KEY OF A MAJOR

Practice just the chords! We’ll talk about basic strumming patterns next week, but for this week, just practice getting comfortable with the chords.

Listen to “THE CHORDS” and “THE CREW-CUTS” version of this song (They are in different keys so you can’t sing along but it’s helpful.

How to Practice this at home:

CRAZY

  • 10 - 15 min daily or every other day

  • Focus only on verses this week! (You’re going to want to go on, but work on solidifying the verses first!)

  • Listen to Willie Nelson and Patsy Cline versions

  • Practice only the chords slowly first (no singing)  Strumming pattern for now should be simple:

1    2 3   4

D   D D   D

SH-BOOM

  • Practice just the chords! We’ll talk about basic strumming patterns next week, but for this week, just practice getting comfortable with the chords.

  • Listen to “THE CHORDS” and “THE CREW-CUTS” version of this song (They are in different keys so you can’t sing along but it’s helpful.

ADDITIONAL STUDY:

We will use this song as a warm-up moving forward:

BLUE MOON.

As you may notice, the song is in the same key (C major) so you’ll see a lot of overlap of the same chords!

Next week: Discuss phrasing/arrangement for Crazy - solidify timing as we play

Learn strumming pattern for sh-boom, learn bridge
