Paragraph summary of what was covered in class

In class we worked on tuning using harmonics, working our way through the root fifth worksheet worksheet, coined the phrase “a fifth below is across the road” and applying that to the jazz standard Summertime, and talked about building a bass line for Fare Thee Well.

Assignment for next week

Play along with the recording of Fare Thee Well that ‘s here in the recap. Try utilizing these 4 different bass part approaches:

  • Play a long note only when the chord changes

  • Play whole notes at the beginning of every measure

  • Play in a “2-feel” (2 notes per measure) using only the root of the chord

  • Play in a 2-feel using a root-fifth bass line.

How to Practice this at home

Play along with the recording here.
