We did an E major 2 octave scale, and then spent the rest of the class working on our RECITAL PIECE which is…...Don’t Worry Be Happy. WE worked on reading the written bass part, and the melody. We also introduced the technique of sliding into notes (scooping) for a bluesy, lyrical effect.


Assignment for next week

Work on learning the Don’t Worry be Happy bass part and Melody. Priority is the bass part. Please try your best to be able to play that part.

We did a full upright bass workout in class. We did a 2 octave E major scale, worked on the Schubert and talked about fingering for it, played I’ll fly away and talked about harmony, and we worked on Mardi Gras in New Orleans. We also talked about vibrato, and how it is done.

Keep working on the schubert, the E major 2 octave scale, and Mardi Gras in New Orleans

We worked on playing a 2 octave E major scale. We talked about Careless love and note choices. We worked on the left hand exercieses, and we site read some of the Schubert.


Assignment for next week

Practice the Schubert. Play the E 2 octave major scale.


How to Practice this at home

Practice slowly. Write in fingerings as necessary. Play along with the recordings here.

Week #3

  • Scale: Eb major scale

  • Technique:

  • Repertoire: Walking on the Moon

  • Additional Studies:


Paragraph summary of what was covered in class

We worked on the Eb major scale and playing in 3.5 position. We worked on the spacing of a whole step with our left hand, and shifting. We worked on time keeping by playing “walking on the moon” with a disappearing metronome. We worked on “Mardi Gras in New Orleans” and talked about how to play it smoothly and make it feel good. We talked about “Gliss” which is short for glissando.


Assignment for next week

Practice the left hand exercises with the audio here in the recap. Adhere to the fingerings tbat are written in the exercise. Practice them with the bow. Have a bass line to Careless love written.


How to Practice this at home

Practice everything with the bow, except for Careless Love and Mardi Gras in New Orleans. You can also practice the Walking on the Moon, bass line with a metronome if you’d like by setting the metronome to 50bpm with each click equally a half note.

We reviewed the Ab scale from last week. We had an introduction to triplet and quarter note triplets. We played our individual parts to Careless Love. We worked on time keeping and we learned a new groove.

Practice your Eb scale. Practice Mardi Gras in New Orleans with the prescribed fingering.

Welcome back! We worked on playing scales with the bow focusing on intonation. We read through an open string exercise, and we talked about how to interpret a lead sheet and come up with bass parts.


Assignment for next week

Write out your own bass part ot Careless Love. Practice the rhythm worksheet, and practice your D Major scale.
