Viola Beginner II

Viola Beginner II: Week #3

Week #3

List of Goals for the week:

  • Warm Up: Hoedown Rhythm

  • Scale: C major scale

  • Technique: Fingered Double Stops

  • Repertoire: Old Joe Clark first phrase in hoedown rhythm

Paragraph summary of what was covered in class

This week we started putting the techniques we’ve been learning together. We worked on stringing the hoedown rhythm together, continued to work on the C scale in rhythm, adding fingers to the double stops (walking up the notes of the A string while simultaneously playing the open D string) and adding the hoedown rhythm to the first phrase of Old Joe Clark. Remember to keep everything as separate as you can and go back to reviewing basic techniques.

Assignment for next week

Comfortably play the C scale with two bows per note and two beats of rest

Comfortably play 4+ Hoedown Rhythms in a row

Comfortably play double stops with fingers on A

Comfortably play the first phase of Old Joe Clark in rhythm

How to Practice this at home

Hoedown Rhythm: Get 3-5 clean repetitions of the hoedown rhythm 4 times in a row without stopping

Fingered Double Stops: Get 3 repetitions of walking up and with all the right notes

Old Joe Clark: Practice the notes of each phrase 3 times and practice the first phrase in hoedown rhythm 3-5 times.
