Violin Advanced III: Week #2
List of Goals for the week:
Review Bow Holds
Long Tone Drones
B Minor, D Major Scales
Shostakovich 2nd violin part
This week we reviewed bow holds and bow arm motion, making sure that thumbs were bent, pinkies balanced the bow, and that our tone was being produced from the weight of the arm rather than pressure or force. We spent a few minutes droning on a long tone chord using full bows and focusing on that tone production. We reviewed the D Major and B Minor scales, playing each in thirds against the group. We focused on tuning up the second violin part of the Shostakovich duet and working on reading in rhythm.
Assignment for next week
Comfortably play through D major and B Minor Scales
Comfortably play long tones using the whole bow.
Comfortably play the notes and rhythms for Shostakovich Second Violin part
How to Practice this at home
Play D major and B Minor Scales 3x focusing on intonation
Set a timer for 1 minute and pick a drone note focusing on using the whole bow, checking bow hold and listening to sound.
Pick 3 trouble spots per practice session and drill each 5x before putting the whole piece together
