Violin Advanced: Week #1
Goals for the week:
Warm Up: Playing in 3rd Position
Scale: D Major 1 octave scale
Technique: Slurs (on 2 octave g major scale)
Repertoire: Ashokan Farewell (sheet music in link below)
This week we learned how to play in third position on the violin. Make sure that your thumb and first finger are aligned with the third finger tape on the instrument so that on the E string your first finger plays the pitch A (third finger tape) the second finger plays B (fourth finger tape) then feel out your third finger C sharp (a whole step above the second finger) and 4th finger D (half step above third finger). We also learned hte 1 octave D scale which is the same finger pattern as the A major scale from beginner 1, starting on open D. We also reviewed the slurred G major scale and read the notes for the first phrase of Ashokan Farewell.
Assignment for Next Week:
Comfortably play the notes of 3rd position on the E String
Comfortably play the 2 octave G major scale with slurs
Comfortably play the notes for the first phrase of Ashokan Farewell.
How to Practice
Third Position: Play up and down the notes of 3rd position 3 times slowly with good intonation and clear bows
Slurred G Scale: Play twice up and down with stop bows and twice with smoothed out slurs.
Ashokan Farewell: Practice the notes of the first phrase 3-5 times per day. If you aren’t able to easily get through the whole phrase then practice in 2 measure sections 5-7 times each.
