Summary

This week we reviewed the D Major Scale and put the F Major Scale into time. We reviewed the first measure of Kreutzer with the bow finger exercise. We worked on improving bow control and working on dynamics through different parts of the bow using bow pressure and bow speed. We also reviewed the first 20 measures of the Intermezzo and worked on measures 20-47.

Assignment for next week

Comfortably play the D major scale in 3rd position with solid intonation
Comfortably play the F Major scale in half notes ascending and descending
Comfortably play the first measure of the Kreutzer Etude using only bow fingers
Comfortably play through sheet of bow exercises
Comfortably play notes and rhythms for Intermezzo

How to Practice this at home

Practice D Scale 3x checking in with intonation
Practice F Scale 3x with all correct shifts and finger patterns
Warm up bow finger exercise for 30-60 seconds then play the first measure using only the hand 5x
Go through the first part of bow exercises then pick one exercise from the second half each day
Spend 10-15 minutes reviewing trouble spots from Intermezzo and then run the piece 3x

Summary

This week we reviewed the D Major scale and put the F Major scale into time. We added the bow fingers exercise to the first 8 notes of the Kreutzer Etude. We also worked on polishing the first 19 measures of the Intermezzo

Comfortably play F Major scale in time going into 5th position

Comfortably (and slowly!) play the first 8 notes of Kreutzer with bow finger exercise using only the fingers

Get comfortable with the notes and rhythms for the first 19 measures of the Intermezzo

How to Practice this at home

Warm up the 5th position notes of F major then slowly play the scale 3x

Practice the first 8 notes of the Kreutzer slowly with space in between each note using only bow fingers to move the bow 5x

Spend 10-15 minutes identifying and practicing trouble spots then read through the first 19 measures of Intermezzo 3x

Summary

This week we continued to work on long tones, focusing on solid bow are motion and good bow holds. We reviewed the D Major scale applying the tone improving techniques. We walked through the two octave F major scale, going up into 5th position. We learned the bow fingers exercise, starting by pulling your knuckles up parallel with your hand with your fingertips pulling into your palm, then holding the bow in the left hand and using the fingers to push the tip of the bow 1-2 inches to the left. Make sure only to use your fingers, not your hand, wrist or arm. We worked on the first 8 measures of the intermezzo focusing on notes and rhythm.

Comfortably Play the D Major scale in tune

Start to get comfortable with the notes of the two octave F Major Scale

Start to get comfortable with bow finger exercise with and without bow

Comfortably play through the first 8 measures of Intermezzo

How to Practice this at home

Play D major scale 3x with clear intonation

Warm up the 5th position notes of F major then slowly walk through the scale 3x

Practice the bow finger exercise 15x without bow and 15x with bow

Practice trouble spots Intermezzo 3-5x and then read first 8 measures 3x

Summary

This week we reviewed posture and tone production and worked on creating a full, loud round sounds across the whole bow with drones. We reviewed the D major, 2 octave scale in 3rd position. We did a full read through of the Intermezzo.

Comfortably play a full, round tone across the whole bow

Comfortably play the D Major 2 octave scale in 3rd position with clear intonation.

Start to get comfortable with the Intermezzo notes and rhythms

How to Practice this at home

Spend 30 seconds to one minute droning on an open string paying attention to posture, tone production and bow speed

Practice the D Major scale 3x in third position, focusing on clean intonation

Read through the intermezzo, spend 5-10 minutes focusing on any trouble spots that arise then re-read the intermezzo.
