GENERAL QUESTIONS

Can my kid take lessons through your program?

Bantam Studios offers group classes + workshops for adults 21 years of age and older. For kids, we recommend that you reach out to the Brooklyn Music School for information about their children's program.

DO YOU OFFER PRIVATE LESSONS?

We do not offer private lessons. Our classes and workshops are all designed for group learning. In the case of a specialty situation (preparing for an audition, screen role, or a specific style and technique), we would love to put you in touch directly with a faculty member who might be best suited for your needs. QUESTIONS ABOUT CLASSES AND LOCATION

Where are classes held?

Classes are held at the Brooklyn Music School: 126 St Felix St, Brooklyn, NY 11217

Can I Audit a class before registering? 

Due to class size limitations we do not allow class auditing. If you are unsure about what level to sign up for, please reach out to us via our class placement form and we will work with you to try to find the best level class. If the class isn't a good fit, you are allowed to move to a class that is a more appropriate fit.

How big are classes?

On average most classes are in the 10-15 student range.

When do classes meet?

Classes will meet weekly on the same day and at the same time for the 8-Week Session. If you sign up for Tuesdays at 7:00pm, you will attend class on Tuesdays at 7:00pm for the entire session. All Bantam Studios Classes take place Monday - Thursday at either 7:00pm - 8:00pm or 8:15pm - 9:15pm.

What do I do if I have to miss class?

Please notify your teacher if you have to miss class. If you have to miss one class, we recommend that students get caught up with the class recaps that are posted weekly. If you have to miss two or more classes, we offer an "Office Hours Session" (a 30 minute private lesson that costs $30) on a limited basis and subject to teacher availability.

HOW MUCH WILL I HAVE TO PRACTICE?

Part of the experience of taking lessons at Bantam Studios is learning how to incorporate "best practices" as a music student into your busy schedule. New concepts, techniques and practicing strategies will be introduced during class time and students will be assigned small assignments to practice throughout the week. It's important to know that repetitions in small increments are the best way to master techniques and to learn how to play an instrument. There are weekly recaps for all of our technique-based classes that students will have access to which will provide information about how to practice at home during the week. On average, 3-4 practice sessions of 15 minutes per week is what students should plan for.

Why is it called "Booze" Violin/Cello/Bass/Guitar/Ukulele/Mandolin/ETC

At every class we offer students the option of having wine + beer to help create a social and casual environment. It's not mandatory that students drink, but it's important to note that there will be alcoholic beverages offered at every class.

Do you provide the Wine + Beer? What does it cost?

The wine + beer that is offered at class is free. We ask that students to keep it to a two-drink limit per class.

QUESTIONS ABOUT INSTRUMENTS

Do I get to take my rental instrument home?

All rental instruments are the student's responsibility for the 8 week course. You will be allowed to bring your instrument home to practice and will be responsible for bringing your instrument to class each week. .

do you teach left-handed?

Since we only offer group classes, we cannot accommodate left-handed instruments. 

I have my own instrument, can it be used for class?

All instruments need to be up to the playing standards of our rental packages. Please make sure you have your instrument set up and repaired before classes start. (Allow for at least 2-3 weeks) We do not have extra instruments that you can borrow for class.

VIOLINS  A Full-Sized violin is required (4/4). The violin must have fitted pegs that can stay in tune, a bridge that has been carved for the instrument, and fresh strings (2 years old max).  Also required is a bow with playable hair that can be tightened and loosened, a shoulder rest, and a non-broken or dried-out rosin. For course levels 101.1-102.2 fine tuners on all four strings are required.

Unacceptable: Electric Violins, 5-String Violins, 3/4 Sized Violins, Violas.

CELLOS A Full-Sized cello is required for all players above 5'1 in height. The cello must have fitted pegs that can stay in tune, a bridge that has been carved for the instrument, and fresh strings (2 years old max).  Also required is a bow with playable hair that can be tightened and loosened, and a rock stop or end-pin anchor. 

Unacceptable: Electric Cello, Viola da Gamba

MANDOLINS Standard tuning in playable condition: has working tuners, accurate intonation, fresh strings and low action. Students must have a strap and tuner.

Acceptable: Banjo-mandolin
Unacceptable: Mandola, Mandocello

UKULELE Soprano or Concert Ukulele in playable condition: has working tuners, accurate intonation, fresh strings and low action.

Acceptable: Banjo-ukuleles
Unacceptable: Tenor or Baritone Ukulele.

GUITAR Standard Six String Acoustic Guitar in playable condition: has working tuners, accurate intonation, fresh strings and low action.

Unacceptable: Electric Guitar, Tenor Guitar, Vihuela, Twelve String Guitar, other instruments in the guitar family that have a different number of strings or tuning.

BASS Standard 4 string electric bass in playable condition: has working tuners, working electronics, accurate intonation, fresh strings and low action. Neck of the instrument must be straight and in good playing condition.

Unacceptable: Upright Bass, Five String Electric Bass, Acoustic Bass without a pickup.

QUESTIONS ABOUT THE RECITAL

WHy is there a recital?

Part of the goal of the Bantam Studios curriculum is to prepare students for continuing their skills in out in the world outside of an educational setting. We feel that it's important to provide performance opportunities at the very beginning of the learning experience to help expose students to playing in front of an audience. It's also a very fun way for students to share what they've learned with their friends and family.

Do students perform in groups at the recital?

All students will perform in a group with their class, or a combination of all the classes at the same level. 

Why are there two recital dates?

Bantam Studios has two recitals per semester, one for beginner students (101 -102.1 Course Levels) and one for Advanced Students (102.2 - 107 Course Levels).

Is there an admission fee for the recital?

Both recitals are free and open to the public.

Is the recital mandatory?

The recital is NOT mandatory, but it is a really fun way to end our semester. Many of our students who were apprehensive about the recital will tell you that it's the best part of the 8-week-session.

What are your cancellation policy for registrations?

If you would like to cancel a class registration, you must notify us in writing. Refunds or credits are not issued for classes not attended. Bantam Studios credit is valid for one year from the date of issue. It cannot be redeemed for cash. Refunds or credits will be issued based on the date of written class cancellation, as follows:

  • Cancellation before the Sunday of the first week of class: 50% refund or 100% credit

  • Cancellation after the Sunday of the first week of class: No refund, 100% credit

  • Cancellation after the Sunday of the second week of class: No refund or credit

  • All Instrument Rental fees are non-refundable.

What are your policies about cancelling classes for inclement weather?

Bantam Studios will cancel classes if New York City public schools are closed or if schools are let out early. We will try our best to find makeup opportunities although we cannot guarantee that there will be a makeup for any classes that are cancelled due to weather or force majeure.
